Respite Connections has been offering community based support services to Ohio families since 1999. Respite Connections was established in 1999 to provide respite care services to children at risk of abuse and neglect and youth with severe behavioral issues. The mission of Respite Connections was to provide quality respite services in order to prevent abuse, neglect and out of home placement. The agency was established through grants made possible by Nationwide Foundation, Columbus Foundation, O’Neil Foundation, Harry C. Moore Foundation and the Columbus Youth Foundation. Respite Connections services were paid for primarily by local agencies such as Franklin County Children Services, Franklin County Board MR/DD, Franklin County Mental Health agencies and many other agencies, along with surrounding county agencies. Over the years, Respite Connections expanded our vision and services to provide a continuum of community-based therapeutic services to individuals with special needs in hope to enhance their quality of life, assist them in meeting their fullest potential and enable them to develop healthy relationships. In 2002, we established Camp SOS for kids who needed a very specialized summer camp program due to their special needs. We then added home-base services to help parents increase their own parenting and life management skills. As our clients grew older, our need to expand our services into transitional and supportive living options became more obvious. In 2007, we began providing services to young adults with serious mental health and developmental disabilities in supporting them in their own homes. We also established an Adult Day Services program called Deaf Day Services. In October 2010, Alternative Day Services was added to provide day programming for young, hearing adults who had more serious behavioral and mental health issues as well. Our summer program changed its name to KIDS KAMP and our after school program was started in 2010. The success and expansion of our programs allowed Respite Connections to obtain the means to purchase our own building in the summer of 2010. We currently are working on becoming accredited to provide mental health services to individuals with both developmental disabilities and mental health needs. With the support of great staff, our community and our Board of Directors, our agency continues to fulfill our mission and provide quality services to members of our central Ohio community.
